but it's an investment many are putting at risk seeking a bargain. kolo 8 news now's ed pearce has the story. 00-:17 :17-:30 :30-1:22 1:22-1:27 1:27-1:35 let's say you're paying attention to your car's needs. it's due for an oil change. you wander into a dollar general store. there on the shelves--motor oil, their brand at a fraction of the price you'd pay up the street at an automotive supply store. oil is oil right? well not quite. pearce: "now this is a 30 weight motor oil, something you might buy if you thought you didn't need a multi-grade oil but not if you read the fine print on the back saying it shouldn't be used in any motor vehicle made after 1930. even cars made 30 to 40 years ago needed additives in their oil, but the additives back then were different. you might buy this oil, a 10-30 weight oil unless you read on the back that it was not suitable for cars made after 1988." you heard right. if your 88 year old ford model t is down a quart, the 30 weight might fit your needs. the 10-30 might be ok in that pre-1988 classic in your garage, if you want to risk it.
6:33 pm
than these say these bargain oils have killed their engines and that's led to a class action suit against dollar tree for insufficient warning about potential damage to modern cars. dollar general's response has been to point to the fine print as sufficient warning and note that there are still older cars out there on the road who fit the criteria. but the real lesson here is we should know what oil is going into our cars. there are manufacturer's specs and they are there for a reason. doyle: ed pearce kol0 8 news now that class action lawsuit was filed only against dollar general, but we found similar oils being sold at other bargain stores. again, the warning is right there on the label in the fine print.
